The winter transfer market is always a time of feverish speculation and potential major transfers. Numerous prominent stars are being linked with moves out of their present clubs. This article explores a selection of the major names who might be changing clubs in January.

The English centre-back has impress for Crystal Palace despite a summer transfer to Liverpool collapsing. As his deal due to run out in the summer, January is the club's last opportunity to obtain a fee for their captain. A host of top sides, such as Manchester City and multiple European giants like Bayern Munich, Real Madrid, and Barcelona, are believed to be interested. Yet, a winter departure remains unlikely, particularly given the coach's dependence on the player.

B. Johnson

This Wales winger has had first-team minutes hard to come by at Spurs this term. Despite finishing as the club's top scorer the previous campaign, Johnson has started just a handful of Premier League matches. It is understood the North London club would be open to a sale for the correct price, thought to be in the region of £40 million. Bournemouth appear to be at the front of the queue, with Crystal Palace, Aston Villa, and Brentford also credited with an interest.

Rúben Neves

This Portuguese playmaker might be poised for a return to the English top flight after a period in Saudi Arabia. Now just 28, while his contract ending in the summer, he represents a possible opportunity. Teams like Liverpool and Manchester United are linked with the former Wolves man. Furthermore, there have been suggestions from Spain that he is prepared to take a pay cut for a move to Real Madrid.

M. ter Stegen

This experienced Germany shot-stopper is now as the third option at Barcelona following new manager Flick. After fallen out of favour and undergone an operation, a winter exit looks highly likely. Aston Villa were once mentioned as a potential suitor, but that option now appears off. Instead, clubs from Saudi Arabia and Turkey are thought to be expressing curiosity in the keeper.

Ivan Toney

The prolific England centre-forward has continued finding the net regularly in the Middle East. Coming back to the Premier League might boost his dwindling chances of making the England squad. But, arranging a deal presents major hurdles. Al-Ahli are reluctant to part with him, and his reported enormous weekly wages render any move difficult. Tottenham, Manchester United, and Everton are all linked as interested parties.

This highly-rated Turkey attacker is in excellent form for Juventus this season. As his current contract running down, a host of Premier League clubs – including Tottenham, Arsenal, Chelsea, and Liverpool – are keeping tabs on the developments. Juventus are desperate to tie down the youngster to a new long-term contract but are in a battle to keep one of Europe's brightest young talents.

Kees Smit

The much-admired Dutch midfielder has drawn parallels to a Belgian superstar for his style of play. Following impressing at the U19 Euros, he has become a regular in the AZ side. The 19-year-old is widely expected to make a major transfer this month. Newcastle United reportedly are frontrunners, but could face strong rivalry from Real Madrid for a deal valued at around £22 million.
